Stawiki in Sosnowiec: One of the Region's Favourite Outdoor Destinations

On the western edge of Sosnowiec, close to the border with Katowice, Stawiki has become one of the city's most popular places to relax, stay active and enjoy nature. What was once an industrial excavation site is now a thriving recreational area, combining a lakeside beach, watersports, walking and cycling routes, and green spaces that attract visitors throughout the year.

The transformation of Stawiki is one of Sosnowiec's most successful regeneration stories, which shows how former industrial land can be given a new purpose while preserving its connection to the city's past.

A Landscape Shaped by Industry

Like many parts of the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie region, Stawiki owes its existence to industry. The lake occupies the site of a former sand quarry, created to supply materials for mining operations across Upper Silesia.

The area also reflects the region's complex history. Before 1922, the nearby Brynica River formed part of the border between the Russian and German Empires. Although historically associated with neighbouring Szopienice, Stawiki officially became part of Sosnowiec following administrative boundary changes in 1960.

In the decades that followed, the lake developed into a popular recreation area alongside the construction of Stadion Ludowy. Environmental challenges during the 1970s temporarily affected water quality, but restoration work in the following years helped return the reservoir to recreational use.

A Popular Destination For Every Season

Today, Stawiki offers something for almost everyone, whether you're looking for an active day outdoors or simply somewhere to enjoy the scenery.

During the summer months, the supervised beach is one of the city's most popular attractions. Visitors can make use of changing facilities, accessible pathways, picnic areas and a designated swimming zone overlooking the calm waters of the lake.

Away from the beach, a network of walking and cycling paths circles the area, making it a favourite destination for running, cycling or a stroll. Outdoor exercise equipment, playgrounds and numerous benches encourage visitors to spend longer exploring the surrounding parkland.

A 700-metre educational nature trail introduces local wildlife and wetland habitats, adding an environmental dimension to a visit and highlighting the biodiversity that has returned to the former industrial site.

A Leading Centre For Watersports

One of Stawiki's biggest attractions is Wake Zone Stawiki, widely recognised as one of Poland's leading wakeboarding facilities.

The venue features a full-size cable system alongside a separate beginner lift, making it suitable for both experienced riders and those trying the sport for the first time. Equipment hire, coaching sessions and regular competitions have helped establish the lake as a major destination for watersports in southern Poland.

Investment Continues To Shape the Area

The modern appearance of Stawiki is the result of sustained investment by the city over the past decade.

Some of the latest Improvements include:

  • Modern promenades and pedestrian routes

  • New cycling infrastructure

  • Landscaped green spaces

  • Lakeside pier

  • Improved lighting

  • Additional parking space

  • Expanded recreational facilities

These developments have created an attractive public space that is used not only for leisure but also for community events and outdoor activities throughout the year.

One of Sosnowiec's Standout Attractions

Stawiki has become far more than a local beach. It represents the successful transformation of an industrial landscape into a vibrant public space where sport, recreation and nature exist side by side.

Its convenient location near Katowice, excellent transport links and expanding leisure facilities continue to attract visitors from across the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis, while for residents it remains one of Sosnowiec's finest places to spend time outdoors.
